“Ohana” represents an integration of the house and its domestic gardens into a natural setting. The project is about garden making, as well as protection and repair of nature. An understanding of the whole site, and its wider natural setting resulted in a stable, enduring and self sustaining landscape.

An ‘outside in’ approach was taken with the design of the gardens and broader landscape, focusing on the in uences of the surrounding area and the sensitive nature of the site to inform the character of the garden areas that surround and interact with the nger like pavilions of the house.

The site is home to several Endangered Ecological Communities and examples of endangered and threatened ora. A focus on the use of local and recycled materials where possible and the use of predominately native and locally occurring plant species was key to our approach, along with site reparation and contribution to the local area through responsible land management.

Play areas and custom designed equipment, new links to the beachfront and rainforest areas, a bountiful kitchen garden, harvested rainwater, open recreation areas, intimate spaces, and an often seamless interaction between dwelling and garden all cater for a diverse family dynamic.
