Sue Barnsley Design, working collaboratively with JILA, won this two stage competition to reimagine the lookout at the summit of Mount Ainslie.
The concept proposes limited but strategic adjustments to the lookout, to better articulate the landscape section at the termination of the land axis linking Mt Ainslie with Parliament House, thereby reinforcing the axis and reinstating the importance of this point in the Griffin’s plan for Canberra. The intervention anticipates and heightens the experience of arrival – from the point where the road splits around the rocky summit outcrop, through a series of threaded points and changing outlook.
The bushland setting is repaired and restored as a framework for the lookout point, and for new places for picnic and recreation.
